There are two programs under the J1 visa:
I. Internship II. Traineeship How to qualify for the Internship Program:- students currently enrolled at a school/ university with a degree or certificate
- granting post-secondary institution outside the United States
- recent graduates within 12 months (1 year)
- with a degree or certificate granting post-secondary institution
- graduates with a degree or certificate granting post-secondary institution
- with one year of work experience outside the United States or
- non-graduates or under-graduates with five (5) years of work experience outside the United States
J1 Program Lengths:
- 6 months (Hotel/ F&B/ Culinary)
- 12 months (Hotel/ F&B/ Culinary)
- 18 months (Hotel/ F&B)
The J-1 programs start at 6 months to 12 months (non-culinary up to 18 months).

The DS-7002 serves a an agreement between the intern/ trainee and the host company.
For short the DS-7002 is the training plan, which lays out the tasks and objectives that will be completed during the program;
as well as the departments the intern/ trainee will be going through.
COCIC will help you put this document together.
The DS-2019 form is the “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status”.
This is a Department of State controlled document that can only be produced through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
The DS-2019 form is the basic document required to support an application for an exchange visitor visa (J-1). The document has a total of two (2) pages.
DS-2019 Form:
Part 1: Identifies the J1 Participant (Intern/ Trainee)
Part 2: Identifies the Visa Sponsor
Part 7: Contains the name, signature and telephone number/ address of the visa sponsor’s responsible officer
Part 2: Provides a brief description of the program activity to be completed by the J1 Participant
Part 3: Identifies the beginning and end dates of the program
Part 4: Program Category
Part 5: Provides a breakout of the total estimated financial support to be provided to the J1 participant during the cultural exchange program
Remember where you last saw or had it.
If you lost it in a bus, taxi or public transportation. Report it to the police immediately.
Sometimes you are lucky to be able to retrieve it back.
However if you need to replace your passport, you are required to contact the nearest consulate for your home country.
I-94 Departure Record
Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) departure record Form I-94 (white) or Form I-94W (green)
You need to fill this up upon arrival and the Immigration Officer will attach this in your passport.
When your J1 program expires and you depart from the United States this needs to be reclaimed by the Immigration Officer.
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
SEVIS is the Department of Homeland Security database developed to collect information on the J visa holders.

The “grace period” is 30 days after the J-1 program expires.
If there is no earlier date indicated on your I-94, you are allowed to stay for another 30-day “grace period” after the termination date.
You will be allowed to travel for 30 days within the United States. You cannot work or travel outside the United States during this period.
The Two-Year Home Country Physical Presence Requirement is also referred to as the “Home Residency Requirement,” the “Two-Year Rule” or simply “212(e).”. To find out if this rule applies to you, simply look in the middle of the left side of your DS-2019 for the section that says: “212(e)” rule does or does not apply. You may also look at your J1 visa.
As soon as you arrive in the United States, you need to check-in and notify your visa sponsor of your arrival. As soon as your visa sponsor receives confirmation that you have arrived in the United States, they will activate your SEVIS number in the SEVIS system as well as your health insurance. We suggest you wait 7-10 business days before applying for a Social Security card at the local Social Security office. You may start your internship/ traineeship during this time. After 7-10 business days you may go to your local Social Security Administration office and apply for your Social Security card. Below is the web link to your local Social Security office.
